This result raises questions about previous studies in which AoA was not controlled and about current theories in which it is not addressed. Analyses of the materials used in previous studies suggest that the observed AoA effects may have been due to other factors. We also found little evidence for an AoA effect in computational models of reading that used words that exhibit normal spelling–sound regularities. An AoA effect was observed, however, in a model in which early and late learned words did not overlap in terms of orthography or phonology. The results suggest that with other correlated properties of stimuli controled, AoA effects occur when what is learned about early patterns does not carry over to later ones. This condition is not characteristic of learning spelling–sound mappings but may be relevant to tasks such as learning the names for objects. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

The relationship between working memory and L2 reading comprehension
Since an important role for working memory has been found in the first language acquisition (e.g., Daneman, 1991; Daneman & Green, 1986; Waters & Caplan, 1996), research on the role of working memory is emerging as an area of concern for second language acquisition (e.g., Atkins & Baddeley, 1998; Miyake & Freidman, 1998; Robinson, 1995, 2002, ...
متن کاملThe Development of Reading and Operation Span Tasks in Persian as Measures of Working Memory Capacity for Iranian EFL Learners
This paper presented two complex span tasks in Persian as measures of working memory capacity (WMC). Firstly, the construct of working memory (WM) and possible WM measures that could assess this construct efficiently were critically reviewed. Accordingly, as measures of domain-general components of WM, a reading span task and an operation span task which were documented to assess this construct...
متن کاملThe Effect of Bilingualism/ Monolinguals on L2 Working Memory Capacity and Verbal Intelligence
Issues related to bilingualism and the effects which might have on language learners’ cognitive and meta-cognitive variables have attracted the attention of a couple of researchers in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA).Since a couple of decades ago, there has been a plethora of studies on cognitive and metacognitive differences between bilinguals and monolinguals. However, the impac...
متن کاملThe effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on collocation processing in learners of English
Much interest has recently been directed toward the knowledge of collocations in the field of second language learning since they have been asserted to improve fluency. The current study was intended to examine the effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on the processing of collocations using a Self-Pace Reading Task (SPRT) and relevant working memory tasks. To this end, partici...
متن کاملLearning a second language and working memory: the role of bilinguali
the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the function of working memory in bilingual, monolingual children and children with learning disorder. The research project was of comparative causality type. Participants included 60 monolingual children, 34 children with learning disabilities and 62 bilingual children. Which completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale and preschool children's Wec...
متن کاملThe Performance of Bilingual and Monolingual Children on Working Memory Tasks
Objectives: The purpose of this research was to explore the possible differences in the working memory of monolingual (Persian) and bilingual (Persian-Baluchi) children. We wanted to examine if there is a statistically significant relationship between working memory and bilingualism. Methods: Four working memory (WM) tests, assessing three WM components, were administered to 140 second...
